One of the first councils in the area to make a stand against coal seam gas (CSG), in 2011 they voted unanimously against supporting CSG in the Warrumbungle Shire. To this day they continue not to support the controversial practice of unconventional gas extraction, even though Coonabarabran has a CSG exploration licence over the township. To the North is plans for NSW's largest producing CSG gasfield in the Pilliga Forest and Narrabri farmlands.
